Just had a great class with Larissa. Technically excellent and a wonderful communicator. No detail is too small to focus on and sharing an understanding of why the details matter leads to a better understanding of the exercise. I'm really seeing progress and experiencing meaningful gains. Pilates with Larissa is contributing to better health and performance in the sports (tennis and golf) I’m chasing.
Normally enjoy the club but last time I was there I saw a guy shaving his pubes in the middle of the locker room onto a towel that he eventually tossed in with the rest of the other towels so now presumably now his pubes have contaminated all the towels in the club. Then just now I tried to go and walked about 30 minutes to get there only to realized they were closed for the weekend. A bunch of members and myself were there trying to use the elevator but it wasn’t working and we then realized it wasn’t opened and there was absolutely no communication to the members (at least to myself and the 6 others trying to get in) about the closure. A complete waste of time.
I've had a very positive experience with this location since the first day I stepped in. I had a great tour with Courtney who was very patient with my numerous questions being asked. She was never once pushy or felt obligated like I needed to get a membership with her. The gym itself is great. At the moment I exclusively only do classes due to time restraints with work. I think the class times are very reasonable and the instructors across the board are absolutely fantastic.
BEWARE of this gym. I was given a tour of this gym by Brandon Windsor and he was extremely pushy trying to get me to buy a membership. He was asking me a bunch of personal questions, kept pushing me to sign up immediately, giving me a same-day deadline, and asking way too many personal questions that had nothing to do with fitness. It made me really uncomfortable and I honestly, couldn’t wait to leave. Signing up for a gym membership and getting a tour should be a positive experience. They should also give you some time to think about your decision. Not some sales person trying to pressure you into getting the membership by giving you a deadline on the same day and asking you 20 personal questions. It seemed very intrusive. I would stay away from buying a membership from this gym as their membership policy is incredibly restrictive. You’re locked in for a year, forced to pay $250+ per month upfront, and the only way to cancel is if you move 50+ km away—which, of course, they don’t mention until later. If you’re looking for a gym that values its members instead of just their money, I’d strongly recommend looking elsewhere. There are plenty of better options that won’t try to pressure you into an overpriced, non-refundable contract.
Stronger, lead by Thomas, was the most humbling strength training class I’ve done in a long time. Programming was well-thought out, and his energy was perfectly suited for the class.
False promises at membership sign up for the first year about freeze request. When actually going through the request, it was extremely painful dealing with back & forth emails with the concierge. Watch out: Equinox does discretionary modifications to their member policy which may contain policies that go the opposite to what was promised to you when you signed up. For example, I was told that I could do one freeze during the 1st year. However when I actually requested it, they said the new policy would only benefit those who continue the membership after the 1st year. So basically, you get no membership freeze option at all if you don’t go into a second year. This shocks me as to hell knows how many more instances are like this from them. Plus their account managers turnover is crazy, meaning you never get a hold of a single person who backs you up for the terms you first agreed on.
I echo the sentiments about the lack of service. The club does get busy, and I unfortunately went in 2 Saturdays ago around 11:30am to work out in the free weights area. I was asked by a PT whether they can share a bench but proceeded to cut in the middle of my reps to put his client on it first. I waited on the side and when another bench was available, I moved. Then a different PT cut in while I was still working out and taking a breather in between. He said his client needed the bench and so I informed that I only have one more set left. The trainer pointed to the first bench and said, "you can use that one". I found out their names and wrote an email to the PT manager on Feb 5 asking if I can communicate my experience. I have not heard back. The 3 stars rating is for the beautiful, clean facilities, toiletries and the quality of instruction. Erin and Justin B are top notch instructors equivalent to other class based gyms like YYoga and Soul Cycle. However, direct encounters with the arrogant staff downgrade my experience, as I feel it is a disservice.
