this gym got me back into climbing after 5 years out of it. love the routes and the vibes, Jeremy at the desk has also installed some pretty cool moves for us in the novice climber range that echo/mimic the higher-level routes so we can try techniques. all the other climbers have been so supportive and friendly to us as well, solicited advice and encouragement given freely here!
Fantastic little climbing gym. Focused on bouldering, with great technical setting. If I lived closer, this would be my home gym. Maybe I should move?
I’ve been climbing for nearly 20 years and have watched as gyms in this city have changed and evolved. It’s really upsetting to see what has happened to this Junction location over the last few years. The gym no longer serves to service the local community but very much feels like a piece of bait to get you out to the larger facility outside of the city. Day and member fees have increased substantially, while staff wages remained stagnant, setting frequency remained unchanged, and health hazards like the lack of airflow in the mezzanine area are unimproved. I have tried to cancel my membership multiple times over the phone which is something management prevents the staff from doing which seems absurd. Not giving a lower rating because when setting is done it’s generally of pretty good quality. There’s a lack of variety, especially for shorter climbers, but this is generally the case across all the gyms in the city. I understand that this is a business first, needs to make money, blah blah blah. But you’re servicing and generally left leaning, whiny population who will take their business elsewhere if pushed.
The community and space at this urban climbing gem/gym is so special and unique that I want to keep it hidden, but at the same time I can’t resist giving it the full 5-star review it deserves. I strolled through the doors of Boulderz in the Junction back in October 2024 with virtually no climbing experience. I was just looking for a queer friendly space where I could get active again. Years of arthritis and chronic pain from travelling and working at a desk had set in. My wrists hurt too much to continue doing yoga or martial arts. My lower back and hips were too sore to walk, run, swim or kick. Halfway through the 2-week intro package the change in my body and mindset was set on course and I knew I was hooked on climbing and would become a member. It became my church and Boulderz my home gym. Climbing for me organically blends physical, mental, emotional, and even spiritual elements, together to offer up the perfect form of meditative, restorative and strengthening movement that is adaptable to any body approaching the wall in any state. It is a practice that is learned instinctively and naturally. The only goal is to start at the bottom and go up. There’s no right or wrong way to climb. There is no too fast or slow. There are techniques and terminology you can learn, if you want, and the staff at Boulderz are the most generous and knowledgeable as any I have ever found. After a few months, my approach of just getting on the wall and climbing had reached its plateau. I adapted a fascia flossing practice into my warm up and rest intervals and the result has transformed me. Not only has my body been pain free for the first time since I was 16, it has been toned and strengthened better than any of the workout and diet programs that I reluctantly tried over the years. I encourage anyone interested in climbing to try it out. I have now been to many other climbing gyms around the world and can say without a doubt that Boulderz in the Junction is special and I’m so happy to have it as a home gym.
Best gym in Toronto. Small space but challenging problems. Jeremy is an awesome setter and plays sick electronic music which is always a great vibe. You feel like part of a community at this gym.
I understand the spray wall format but for regulars, it’ll get boring FAST. Not only is it hard for people to establish their own climbs, the spray wall are more for folks who want to train hard - I can see why people are tired of it. I honestly was not excited about it when I walked into this gym the first time. Friendly staff (hi John!), the gym is small but on the second floor, you’ll find a treadwall, 2017 moonboard and heavy weights. There’s even a small section for kids! The mini slide looked fun. Auto-belays are right across from the spray wall. Happy to know that this location is going back to regular sets and will be removing the spray wall! Woohoo! I’ll visit again some day.
Not loving the spray wall system. Spray walls can be good but having the entire gym as spray is a bit much. Great staff and community though. Update: Although the spray walls are being slowly replaced with standard setting (at a pace of one small section of about 10 problems every 3 weeks), those same walls are being filled and reconverted into spray walls again.
