I love this little shop that is big on cards and thoughtful presents. I’ve purchased candles, wonderful soaps, delightful stationary, delicious fudge and chocolate, and so many other treats; I can always count on finding a perfect little something for friends and relatives. I’m so happy to have them in the neighbourhood.
Have been in here - and purchased - several times and service has always been civil, sometimes friendly when the female staff member is there, but always professional. Today, October 9, I asked about boxed holiday cards. The “gentleman” at the cash - owner Mr. Gerry - looked as appalled as one can look behind a mask. “Do you know what the date is?” - clearly angry - no other way to read in to it given his tone and incredulous eye roll. (Perhaps I wasn’t the first to ask?) I smiled (my eyes too) thinking I could salvage the situation, and said I did but I start hand writing my holiday cards every October. He told me that “we do have them but they don't get out out this early”….agitated, annoyed and if there hadn’t been a mask or two between us I would have thought spitting…I explained that it was a simple question and that he didn’t need to be rude. Not sure I’ve ever said that to a person in customer service, having spent many years in similar roles, but not sure that a simple question has ever elicited such fury or attitude. No matter: his competition directly across the road (The Papery - lovely staff, very helpful) had a huge selection of boxed holiday cards - yes, on October 9! So over $143 in cards later I am able to begin the annual tradition of holiday card writing (30 years and counting) in October (horror!) and have taken Paperboy off our list of local vendors to frequent. No loss given the other stationers (two) in his block, but kindness goes a long way in the service industry and I am happy to go where our custom is actually appreciated. Or maybe Mr. Gerry was simply having a bad day - hope that’s the case, but it wouldn’t be enough to tempt me back.
The selection of cards are decent. I felt awkwardly followed around the store and peered at like I was going to steal something. Girl calm down. Yes, I did buy something. Very strange interaction.
