Food is culture and community. It was so special to celebrate a birthday here - with wine pairing (4 generous glasses). We were blown away by the thoughtfulness of service and the meticulous courses. Very creative dining experience that I will be thinking of for a long time especially because it highlighted how intricate and delightful Chinese food is beyond the comforting favourites we’re familiar with.
The space is cosy so expect to share tables with strangers. This restaurant is in the back room of Hong Shing, which gives you a slight speakeasy vibe. They offer cocktails from the shared bar as well as wine and Asian spirits. Chef Eva is a great story teller. She shared how each dish is tied to her memory and heritage. This was very meaningful and heartfelt as we savoured each dish. My personal favorite to my surprise was the shaobing with the smoky eggplant dip and the aromatic rice, which is essential lard rice. It was so flavorful, aromatic with the perfect texture rice. The shiso and lychee granita was also so refreshing. Service was impeccable. Chef Eva’s wife was supporting the dining room and she was lovely. Each dish was unique and well thought out. At the end they also gave a small take away dessert package for my hubby which was very thoughtful. Food was amazing and unique. We also shared the wine pairing which included rare wines not commonly found in Toronto. Overall this was a very enjoyable dinner. Other than the 3.5 hours dining time and the shared table, this meal was near perfect.
A wonderful experience and one of the only good ‘fine dining’ Chinese restaurants in Toronto. Miles better than Sunny’s or Mimi’s Chinese. How crazy that a Chinese person could cook up better Chinese food than some white guys!
My third time trying chef Eva's food and the wonderful thing about a menu changing monthly is that it won't be my last. Amazing seasonality and attention to detail in her dishes with thoughtful presentation throughout. Chef Eva likes to indulge her guests so be prepared to eat well and fast in advance. You'll waddle away satisfied and curious for what the next menu the following month has to offer.
A mixed bag. The multi-course meal is uneven with some real highlights like the clam broth with noodles and pork belly, and, as the long meal continues, too many misses for the price: overcooked, dry rice cake that had an uncooked rice texture in the mouth, spaghetti that seems more Italian style than Asian and badly needed chili oil, and smoked eggplant that tasted like it’d been doused in liquid smoke. The main problem, we all agreed, was the chef needed an editor. Too many courses led to too many oddly incongruous and mediocre dishes. The atmosphere is loud communal tables, fun if you get seated next to fun people! Get ready to socialize. Charming chef and host couldn’t make up for food that didn’t quite hit the mark.
One of Toronto’s most quintessential restaurants—unique in concept, dynamic, and ever-evolving. The team is exceptionally talented, gracious, and focused on delivering an experience unlike any other. Chef Eva’s wealth of knowledge and her concept-driven menus resonate deeply with both locals and visitors. While it may appear “traditional” in the form of a banquet menu, in reality it is anything but. It breaks convention, carving out an identity that is inseparable from the restaurant, the chef, and her vision. These qualities embody the very definition of a Michelin one-star restaurant—an accolade it richly deserves.
We felt at home from the moment we walked in (okay, the Baijiu may have helped). Chef Eva, Theresa, and their team not only pay attention to detail, but find joy in it. The word that I noticed had came up in previous reviews was “nostalgic” when describing the flavours & it could not be more true. This is Neo-Chinese dining at its best. And in the proudest way, Canadian dining at its best.
