Junction Guitars has been a family favourite from getting guitars, to parts to getting repairs done. The owner and his team are knowledgeable in their expertise. They are also very hardworking, kind, helpful and VERY fair with pricing making them one of the most affordable in Toronto. Thank you again Junction Guitars for always being the best and never disappointing!
I was in there about a month ago. I live super close to the store, and figured it would be good to get to know my local guitar shop. I'm an experienced player. The store, and the guitars had a lot of dust and cat hair on them. There are four or five cats that live in the store....and they're on everything. Amps have cat hair on them. The cats sleep on the pedals, etc. I picked up a nice Gretch, and it was very dusty. The staff member ( I think he was the owner) provided me a ton of one word answers, but he didn't seem interested in any sort of conversation at all. I got the sense that I was bothering him. Lots of junk around. Bare shelves, and not the biggest assortment of gear. This place has more of a garage sale vibe than an actual guitar shop. The guy seemed knowledgeable about guitars but not that keen on running a shop or dealing with customers. I did end up buying a small amp and left feeling bad about the purchase.....the amp itself is great, but the buying experience wasn't that great. As much as I like supporting local shops, I won't be returning to this place. Much better service, selection, cleanliness at McQuades, or Chaos.
I brought my acoustic guitar to Junction Guitars for a set up and did not have a great experience and would not recommend the shop to anyone who is getting their first set up. At the initial visit, I explained that I was interested in a set up as it was recommended to me by my instructor to lower my action to make playing barre chords easier (I was playing on a rental with a lower action at the time with much less trouble). I was asked about string gauge and I stated that wasn't sure what I had as I have a second hand guitar. The guy working there suggested a thinner gauge. I told him I had no issues with open chords so wasn't sure if it was necessary, but he told me it would make barre chords easier and went ahead with a thinner gauge. The turnaround was very fast, which I appreciated, but when I picked up the guitar, it sounded off. There was a lot of buzzing on my low E string especially, which I didn't have before. I consulted with my instructor, who agreed with me and ended up bringing the guitar back twice and left with a little improvement each time, but the buzzing persisted. The second time I brought my guitar back, I was told the buzzing was a result of me picking incorrectly. I ended up taking my guitar to another shop after this and was told that the action was installed too low on the bass side, and too high on the treble side. I have no more buzz and my guitar sounds great! I'm sure Junction Guitars is a good place for those well versed in guitars and their preferences for a set up, but as a woman getting her first set up, I felt like I was talked down to a bit and didn't get what I needed out of my repair.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words My first impression of Phil was, well, mixed. I’d heard many good things about him, but he turned out to be a man of few words, and it seemed like he didn’t quite get me. I wasn’t always sure if he even understood my questions. Still, I handed over my Taylor guitar for service without being entirely confident that he’d do everything I needed. My 214CE was bought from Long & McQuade about 10 years ago, and while I have nothing against the store, they’re so overwhelmed these days that it’s hard to get through to them. When I got the guitar back, I inspected the work—and couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the day. Not only did Phil do exactly what I asked, but he went above and beyond. He fixed not just the action, but also took care of a slight neck twist, and even put on the exact strings I’d briefly mentioned, thinking he wasn’t really paying attention. Thanks, Phil! I loved your workshop, and my daughter was thrilled with your cats. I even discussed the possibility of upgrading the electronics on my guitar to something more advanced like the Atmosfeel system, but for now, Phil declined. I hope to understand the reason after some correspondence. After all, two good people should be able to find common ground! :)
I hate to leave a bad review for a local business, but the neck of my brand new guitar was damaged when taking it here for service. For context I’ve been here twice before to have guitars set up and each time have been happy with the work. I recently got a Fender Strat, and took it in for a setup and to have the fret edges rolled as they were sharp. Phil told me the edges were fine but I insisted as I wasn’t comfortable playing with them. He called a week later as promised, and I didn’t feel like the edges were rolled at all but he insisted he did the work so I paid and left. When I got home I noticed that the fretboard and neck finish was chipped off in places along both sides of the guitar, and was a bit upset that this wasn’t even mentioned to me when I picked the guitar up. I called back and Phil advised that “it happens” due to the way the fretboard and neck is bonded, and there was nothing that could be done about it. Photo attached of some of the damage, and you can also clearly see the fret edges are not rolled. I’ll now have to pay more to take the guitar somewhere else to fix the damage caused by taking it here, and to have someone actually roll the fret edges which I already paid to be done here.
My boyfriend and I recently went in to have his guitar set up and when we picked the instrument up, received zero information on what had actually been done. When asked how everything went, the response was simply "good". Would have anticipated better customer service and more information on the set up.
