Excellent cafe. Friendly service, good coffee with a good (funky & fun) bean collection and aesthetically pleasing space. Even though it’s a lovely roastery they don’t price gouge. Free wifi but not many big tables to work from.
Ordered a Cortado and found it to be too milky. It wasn't steamed enough and the coffee flavours did not come through. The pourover was good, so perhaps that is the star of Subtext.
Subtext is one of those places that just feels good to be in. You can tell how much care goes into everything they do - from their ethical sourcing and roasting to the beautifully designed space. The team is always warm and welcoming, and Alex brings such intention to the whole experience. Subtext has completely elevated how I think about and taste coffee. It’s clear they care deeply about quality, sustainability, and creating something meaningful.
Exceptionally well made coffee, very big open space to hang out. My only con is that they aren't open for longer hours. Been on a coffee journey lately wanting to try out more 'different' coffee with brighter, fruiter notes and the recommendations they gave us very much gave me what I was looking for If you have any interest in coffee then absolutely visit here if you get the chance!
We bussed out of our way for this one since we had a good recomendation for it. You can tell they focus just on good beens and good coffee which is a huge plus in my book. I think they said they didnt do syrups or fermented (but I may be remembering that wrong). We ended up getting just a coldbrew which was great with the heat. They have a variety of good seating, some of which is kind of unusual and bleacher-like but works. The staff is pretty friendly and knowlegable as well. It may be a bit out of the way but I think its worth it.
Did the coffee cupping for $39. Unfortunately the 1.5hr session missed the mark for me. There was not enough direction or education. Intro was ~5 minutes, walked around to smell ground coffee for ~5 minutes, and then sat and waited for the coffee to steep for another ~10 minutes. People were then free to roam around for ~40 minutes tasting coffee on their own without any guidance. We then sat down to reveal what each cup (there were about 12-15 of them) was and where the beans came from. There was no evaluation or discussion. If you're experienced with specialty coffee and know what to look for then this may be for you, but if you are thinking a cupping would wet your feet to the world of specialty coffee then you should try another cupping elsewhere.
This hidden gem in the Junction (Toronto) is a roastery slash space for coffee enthusiasts and nomads. This beautiful spot also boasts some great baristas with so much bean knowledge--ask them anything! Always a great time to chat. I have been here a few times and this time, actually stayed for a few hours to get some work done. Located in the industrial part of the Junction the space presents itself industrial but filled with warmths. When you walk in, you will see immediately a long coffee bar with various coffee machines for your pour overs, cappuchinos, espresso etc. At the far back, giant machines (roasting things perhaps), workspace for the techs (I think) and a beautiful graffiti art on the back wall. The main seating area comprises of high bar stools, a few desks area with sockets and roman theatre style steps with some tables that you can work from (also with sockets) or just chat away. There is a section in the shop that is a retain space with all the beans you can buy to go and various coffee related pieces. Commute wise, it is not the easiest but it is steps away from St. Clair/Keele. Definitely worth checking out--their coffee is so so so good! Drivers, street side parking available :D
