Good pastries and coffee, but the barista's (red glasses) service and attitude was shockingly rude, which seems to be a common occurrence based on other reviews. I was told she was too busy making drinks to fill my water bottle and that I should go to the basement—without any directions. When I returned for help, I was met again with rudeness and a condescending attitude. Considering the building is enormous and houses a freaking multi-level art gallery, surprise, surprise, I couldn’t find this elusive water cooler. When I finally returned to the coffeeshop to get it filled—cue side-eyed looks and whispers from both baristas, seemingly shocked that a customer would dare ask for water. Here’s a radical idea—why not provide a water jug for your customers if filling bottles is beneath you as a barista, instead of sending them on mission impossible? I’ve never experienced worse customer service in a Toronto coffee shop and shall not be returning—there are many other ones in the city to bother with this one.
This Dark Horse location surprised me in the best way. The staff wasn’t great. Not rude to the point of being offensive, just low energy and not particularly welcoming. But everything they offer in their store pantry is impressive. Tons of sustainable, vegan, and gluten-free options. Really thoughtful stuff. I respect that. What makes this spot stand out is the space around it — 401 Richmond Street. It’s this incredible complex with fine art galleries, mixed-media exhibitions, and a courtyard that feels like its own world. It was one of those accidental discoveries that completely shifts your day. Walking around the space was honestly the highlight. I ordered a flat white with coconut milk, and it was solid. No complaints there. Overall, the vibe of the location carries the experience. Cool menu, great environment, just wish the staff brought a little more to the table.
Great café with top tier atmosphere, but the service staff there are what truly make it spectacular. Jelita/Jay in particular has always gone above and beyond to make sure I feel special every time I visit, and this is why I’ve joined the loyalty program + have been a repeat customer 30+ times in the last two months. Cheers. Bring back the seasonal raspberry scone (to all seasons), it’s the best food on the menu.
Love this Dark Horse Cafe for its ambience! It is difficult to find a quiet, laid back place in Downtown. But this Dark Horse cafe at Richmond street is a hidden gem in Downtown with cozy and casual vibe and a pleasing inviting environment. It is good for coffee and espresso but there aren’t much brunch options here. However, you can snack on to their pastries and breads with your coffee.
The atmosphere is really nice but the coffee was horrible! They did a cortado in a massive cup and I’m assuming they just went with a longer shot or they just poured more milk and it tasted very off like a burnt rubber and the aftertaste went away so quick. Also there was an Asian lady there who was very rude and talked with an attitude when I was touching one of their cup to demonstrate if they do a cortado in that. i mean it’s just a cup but she was like : Dont touch it! I’d come back for the place but will never try the coffee!
I came here to wait for a Lyft during a nonlethal allergic reaction that prevented me from working at an event in the same building. The staff was calm and reassuring, and guided me to one of the padded booths to sit comfortably as I waited. The specific person that helped me even offered to call an Uber for me before I told them I'd already booked a ride home. Atmosphere was warm and well-curated, the food at Dark Horse has been consistently good, and the service impeccable. If you see this, thank you for your kindness in the wake of my vulnerability.
They know how to make a killer cup of coffee. But really, the heart of the place is Jelita. She's so kind and welcoming to everyone. Best barista in the city.
