Service was OK years ago, but the staff have changed the past few years and I can't justify the high labour costs and parts markups. They have also left frustrating service issues behind that I keep finding when working on the car myself - makes me think they are not so competent: 1. The turbo intake pipe is known to become heat-rotted. It probably got damaged during a repair, which is common, and instead of letting me know, they wrapped it in tape!! 2. They must have used some massive impact wrench on my brakes last time they replaced them - because the rotor mounting screws had to be drilled out (should be just finger tight). The calliper bolts were also incredibly tight. 3. Was quoted 10 hours plus some incredible parts prices for a timing chain, tensioner, etc. replacement job (CA$2,500-3,000). I did it in 6.5 hrs and US$500 in parts, having never done it before. Sales dept. pretty horrible. Not recommended (try St. Catharines or maybe some in Durham). Old school sales tactics that turned me off when I was searching for a new MINI years ago (suggesting limited build slots, pricing games, etc. - and then they get butt-hurt when I go somewhere else for less!).
I try to avoid dealership service because of the cost, but I had a problem that I thought needed Mini-specific attention. Ready to pay extra I expected great service. The people were nice, the service was not. Staff were 20 minutes late arriving for my 7AM appointment; I got a note from them that the car was ready, after only one of three jobs were completed; when I went to pick it up I found the car parked unlocked in their open lot; and when I was driving home the warning came on that my rear light was out. The most minor of the three jobs had been to replace that bulb. Initially they resisted committing to a same day fix, but called me back when they re-thought it. So, I drove back to the dealership again and they replaced the bulb. They quietly said “sorry”, but there was no compensation for the extra hassle and no discount offered. I guess the mechanics time is worth the $92 labour on that one lightbulb, but the customer’s time driving back and forth across the city isn’t worth much.
I was shopping around for a car for a few weeks and had been to a few dealerships, and I must say folks at Mini Downtown really spend the time and effort in making a customer happy. I worked with Nick who was very methodical and thoughtful in explaining all the features of the car and then took his time to understand my requirement before making his recommendation which turned out to be amazing. I highly recommend working with Nick as he made the end to end process very easy and simple.
I have been coming here for service for the last decade. I have own and driven all mini models and I absolutely recommend Mini Toronto. All their technicians are experts and are very knowledgeable with everything mini. Aldrick and Tony are excellent, always ready to help. The department manager Tim does a great job at making sure customer service is their top priority.
On Dec. 19th I came in to have my Mini diagnosed for a creaking sound when I brake. James rode with me in the car and said the sound is not coming from the brakes since my brakes are new in front and back. That the sound is coming from the bearings or bushings connected to the suspension. That I don't need to worry about it until it sounds like a tapping and he demonstrated the tapping sound using my dashboard. He said if he hoists up the car to check brakes I would be charged and led me to believe I didn't need service so I left. At that point, I appreciated his honesty and that he saved me from unnecessary costs. On the drive home however, the creaking sound continued to bother me so I went to my local mechanic the day after and they fixed the problem. It turned out it was not the suspension as James said. They serviced the rear brakes and now all is normal again. I regret that I took time off and drove a long distance to Mini only to be dismissed in the end. I went there to have it fixed, not to waste my time. I emailed Aldrick and he had the audacity to lie and tell me that I didn't want to pay for a diagnosis! Lying to the customer is even worse than their misdiagnosis.
Dropped off my car for a oil change at 7:30am, and they told me my car would be ready by noon. I kept waiting for their message to pick up my car, and they told me at 5pm that my car will be there overnight. Turned out they did another a service on my car that I clearly declined when I booked the reservation. Now I have no vehicle for the whole day, and I couldn’t get my bag pack in the car which I need for work right now. Disappointing experience, avoid this location!
