Entering El Sol was like going into a museum of Mexico's Mayan and Aztec past. The walls are beautifully decorated with various artifacts that I wish I had more to inspect closely. I had the Carne Asada which was well seasoned and delicious. The potatoes complemented the dish wonderfully. The manager/owner? provided some pickled peppers on the side which kicked it up a notch. Overall, terrific food, service and atmosphere. A genuine authentic Mexican culinary experience. It was like eating at a Mexican home not just a restaurant.
A true Toronto gem with authentic and delicious food. Don't be discouraged by the pricing, the portions are huge and you will be well fed. I have been here twice now and it's now on the list of one of my favourite go-to spots. You'll see some reviews on here complaining about the service, and to that I say - you need to understand... this is not a big ticket Toronto restaurant that will pander to your every need, instead this is an invitation into this family's (owners) home - they cook everything a la carte and it can take some time. Our entire dinner started at 7:30 and ended past 10PM where we were stuffed with delicious food, full of margaritas, and treated to live entertainment. The atmosphere is beyond cool, surrounded by art with a charming hole-in-the-wall vibe - we requested to be seated at the round table in the back and it felt like we were guests / friends of the owner and his family that run this place. Later in the evening he jumped on the piano and played these incredible piano medley's while we finished our drinks, and even let us join in on some of the musical fun. I had friends visiting and they thought it was the absolutely coolest experience ever! Truly, El Sol is what makes Toronto an amazing city, non-pretentious eats, cooked by people who have a passion for sharing their culture and heritage with others, welcoming you in as one of their own.
Had a wonderful time at this restaurant. The staff was super friendly and they helped make our friend's birthday even more special. And the food was really good. Very authentic.
My family and I have been coming to El Sol since it opened well over 20 years ago. We even went to their first location on O’Connor before that. The food is so good and the quality excellent. We always get the guacamole and love to share the platters for 2. The food here is authentic Mexican, made from the heart. Yes, service is slow, but have you been to Mexico? As I said, authentic!
I cannot say enough good things about this place friends brought me here that are hard core regulars ( its their favorite spot ) and i was greeted with the most friendly face the food was amazing i had the tacos and the margarita was one of the best I had and the chips and guacamole was ammmmaziiinggg! You need thisss! But what was the best was the art work all painted by the owner she really has an eye for this and needs a whole mural! Ask her about her art work crazy talented !
Shared El Sol Meat Platter for 2 ($54) It was enough for 3 portions. Loved taco aguilenos( soft flour tortilla w/chicken, potato in adobo sauce) and taco sonorenses( soft flour tortilla w/ chorizo, egg & veggies). Was so filling and flavorful. However was not too crazy about their hardshell taco offers. Taco dorados( hard shell corn tortillas with chicken & potato) was okay but corn tortilla itself was not too impressive, Tostadas Nortenãs with shredded beef had almost like jerky texture. Both hardshell tacos were covered with thick matchsticks of carrots cucumber which have no flavour in wintertime Canada. I still have not try their Enchiladas, empanadas, mole, tamale & pozole, therefore it is early to say if I liked their food or not. But for tacos I would stick to softshell choices.
YUMMM the empanadas and the salsa that came with them were so good. the guy working at the front was very kind and sweet. will definitely come back here to dine-in when im in the area again :)
